INTERVIEW 2011

What is your profession?

I am a professional student, starting in my 9th year this coming September (I keep changing my major!) 1 more year will earn me a degree in Kinesiology with an English Minor. Following this, I will go to grad school to complete my masters thesis with the goal of teaching at the college level. Currently I am employed at a local club as Membership Coordinator, and as well doing personal training. I also work at a local supplement store.

What kind of activities/sports did you do before you started lifting weights?

Dance for 9 years (jazz, tap, ballet, modern theatre . . numerous competitions), 8 years gymnastics at provincial level . . . numerous competitions, and 1 year wrestling in grade 12 (though it was not my cup of tea) who likes rolling around on stinky, dirty mats with a sweaty girl who's constantly trying to shove my face into the mat? Plus my hair got terribly messy. I'm such a girly-girl. Wrestling is not really my scene!

How and when did you get involved into lifting weights?

I initially joined the local gym in 1998 only because my course in college required me to. I had no idea what I was doing; I was a typical cardio junkie, thinking that an hour of cardio a day would make me skinny. When my course ended I decided to continue with my membership, as I was no longer doing dance or gymnastics. I continued with my hour of cardio each day, and lifting mickey-mouse weights until 2001, when my trainer showed me the light!

Was it a goal for you to compete in bodybuilding competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body?

No, definitely not in the beginning, I knew nothing about it, and I had that famous preconcieved notion that bodybuilding women were big, gross she-men! Pretty ignorant!! But back in December of 2000, I received numerous compliments that I was well suited genetically for fitness or bodybuilding. At first I thought nothing of it, but as I continued to receive these comments, I thought perhaps I should look into it. The following January I hired a personal trainer, and haven't looked back since. I absolutely love my new lifestyle!!

What was your first competition and how did you place?

After 6 months of training I entered the 2001 INBF Northwest Natural Bodybuilding Championships and won the whole show! I couldn't believe it! I had no idea what I was doing, and still hadn't mastered the lat spread! It was very exciting! A nice start to my competitive career!

And which contest has been the biggest success for you yet?

That's a hard question because success can be measured in so many ways. In terms of placings, I am most proud of my overall win at the 2001 INBF Capital City Natural Bodybuilding Championships, as for the overall I was up against a 6 foot tall, 170lb mammoth, while I was only 5' 3" and 118lbs! I posed my ass off for that win, thought for sure there was no way I would take it, and then wound up winning! In terms of exposure and opportunities, hitting the Emerald Cup for the first time in 2003 gave me the opportunity to make many contacts, and thus help to further myself in the fitness industry.

What are the main differences when you train for a competition and in off-season?

I'm very anal about getting my workouts done during competition prep, even to the point of skipping class to make sure my workout gets done! In the off season I have a much more relaxed attitude, which I find is much more healthy for my mind and spirit!

Which bodypart is your best in your opinion?

I'm very proud of the development in my back, particularly my middle and lower traps, and my biceps have a really cool peak!

What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don't like so much?

Even though the squat rack looms over me like a big black cloud, I love the feeling I get when I'm squatting: I feel strong and powerful . . . an empowered woman. I think I have a love-hate relationship with the squat rack! I also love bent over barbell rows! What I don't enjoy is training abs and biceps; BORING!! Lol!

Judging in Women's Bodybuilding has always been criticized in one or the other way. But please tell me your honest thoughts about today's judging in Women's Bodybuilding. In general I think it's very political.. And at the professional level, typically the prizes for the men are much more lucrative than the women's, which is very disappointing considering women work just as hard as men.

Please tell me about what else you are doing when you don't work out (profession, hobbies, etc.)?

I go to school full time, working on a Kinesiology degree, with an English Minor. I am a personal trainer and Membership Coordinator at a local gym, and I also work at a local supplement store. I am also a mentor with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, visiting a little boy once a week to chat, play games, bake - just being his friend. Spare time? What spare time?! Lol! Any time I have leftover is spend kicking back with my special guy and a glass of white wine in hand!
